Nathan Porter Breaks It Down: WordPress Tools for NonProfits

Nathan Porter breaks down tools for Nonprofits on the Give Blog

If you are passionate about your cause and want to succeed online, let us introduce you to Nathan Porter. We think you’ll find his tips and resources invaluable.

You are passionate about your Cause. You’ve spoken at small meetings and told everyone you know about your Cause. Heck, you’ve even enlisted help from the neighbors assembling winter kits for the homeless in your garage. Your passion has brought you to the next level personally and professionally. But now what?

You need a website that tells your story.

You want to have a strong online presence for your Cause. You want to gather a supportive network of people who are passionate about your Cause and start raising funds. We know it’s overwhelming but that’s why you’re here, and we’re here to help.

Nathan Porter, the CEO of Wanna Pixel, Inc., located in Denver, Colorado, recently presented at WordCamp Denver about nonprofit tools. Nathan has a passion for both technology and nonprofits and it shines through in this 17-minute talk.

Though nonprofits have a passion for their cause, frustration in communicating that passion happens naturally. Nathan’s insights can help those who believe in doing what matters become more effective.

Do online donations matter?

Though people value email marketing for engagement, it’s not effective in fundraising campaigns. For example, for every 1,000 email fundraising campaigns that are sent, only $17 is collected.

Who is really giving and when are they doing it?

  • 72% of all online giving comes from individuals.
  • 95% of households give more than $3,000 annually.
  • 20% of giving occurs in December.
  • 10% of that 20% occurs in the last 3 days of the year.
  • Giving Tuesday has increased 35% year over year.

Does mobile matter?

Mobile-responsive giving pages double giving on mobile devices. In 2014, 84% of online giving pages were not optimized for mobile.

How will the gift be used?

  • 63% of all donors want to know how their gift will be used.
  • 75% of donors spend less than 2 hours on research before they give.

Impulse giving is a growing opportunity.

“One of the largest missed opportunities in online fundraising is not keeping your audience on your website where they can be engaged.”

What is the cost when donors are sent to third-party donation pages?

Bounce rates are up to 70% when people are sent to a third-party donation page. Seventy percent!

Onsite donation forms — designed and branded — have less than 1% bounce rate. Keeping your givers on your site, with a simple form, makes it easy for your supporters to donate.

Recurring donors give an average of 42% annually.

Donation Tools for WordPress:

“Give is my favorite.” (We thank you for this.)

Constituents:

Have a plan to target your primary, secondary, and tertiary constituents. Is it based on geography or nation, political party, education level?

It’s common for small nonprofits to track donations on an Excel spreadsheet, lose connection with their donors, and either forget to call a donor — or even worse — double call donors.

UkuuPeople, a CRM tool, is for beginning and starting organizations with a native WordPress interface. It integrates with Google Apps, Gravity Forms, and Give, to name a few.
