Nonprofit Chat: How Much Does Your Donation Platform Cost You?
Our very own Matt Cromwell joined Nonprofit Chat this week about field of designing and building websites for nonprofit organizations.

I had the pleasure of chatting with Nathan and Marisa Porter of Wanna Pixel, Inc for their weekly Nonprofit Chat. They are experts in the field of designing and building websites for nonprofit organizations. They know what works, what doesn’t work, and how to make it happen.
We at Give know how online donations happen, so they invited me to chat specifically about online donations and — more specifically — how third-party systems can impact your overall donation income.
Here’s some of the highlights:
- Bumping your donors to a third-party page to finalize their donations can mean you lose up to 70% of your donations.
- Third-party systems use a payment gateway just like you would with Give. But they make money on top of the payment gateway charges. This means you take home (net) less in donations because of the additional fees they charge. See our article on Why People Choose WordPress for Fundraising for more on that.
- The benefits of owning your own donor data instead of sharing that with a third-party.
- What kinds of campaigns get good exposure on popular crowdfunding websites like GoFundMe.
If you are a nonprofit organization and want to learn more about all things WordPress, the weekly Nonprofit Chat is a great resource. Join their Facebook Group here for updates.
