Donation Visual Form Builder Common Questions

As the teams at GiveWP work diligently on the Visual Donation Form Builder plugin leading up to GiveWP 3.0, some common questions are being shared by site admins and testers. This page will serve as a resource for answering some of those common questions. Please keep an eye on this page as it will be frequently updated as questions arise.

Will my current forms work in 3.0?

Yes! When upgrading to 3.0 nothing will happen to the existing 2.x forms. Every gateway and feature that worked in 2.x will continue to work exactly as they have.

While the new forms are completely different, all the features you’ve come to know and love from the 2.x version will still be available. Donation forms are a critical element for GiveWP customers, and the teams don’t want to risk any compromise.

This does mean that the 2.x forms won’t get to enjoy the benefits of the great new 3.0 form features, but most importantly they will still bring in donations! When you edit a 2.x form, you will be navigated to the 2.x form editor page; when you edit a 3.x form you will be navigated to the new Donation Form Builder.

But don’t worry, the teams at GiveWP are building a way to migrate 2.x forms into 3.0 forms!

Will every add-on and 2.x form feature be supported in 3.0?

Not initially, no.

The teams are working hard to make sure all the most used features — such as Recurring Donations, Currency Switcher, and so forth — are immediately supported upon the initial 3.0 release. Some, however, will receive compatibility after the 3.0 launch.

This is to ensure that the exciting new features of 3.0 are delivered into everyone’s hands as quickly as possible. Also, and importantly, 2.x forms will still continue to work in 3.0. Even if the 3.0 forms don’t support a specific feature that is critical to you, you can still continue using your 2.x forms without any worry or concern, migrating once that feature is supported.

As a note, there are many new features tucked away in 3.0 forms that GiveWP users have asked for over the years (hint: control over donor-selected recurring donation periods). Some old features were intentionally left out because they added unnecessary complexity to the form. If a feature is missing that you loved, the teams at GiveWP would love to not only hear about it but also learn more about how you use the feature to see if it could be implemented in a better way.

How will migrating a 2.x form to a 3.0 form work?

The user interface for this is still being perfected, but the basic idea is that migrations will happen in three stages:

First, on a per form basis, the user will be able to generate a new 3.0 form from a 2.x form. This means that the old form will still be in place; a brand new 3.0 form will be created that takes into account as much of the 2.x form settings as it supports (for example, donation amounts). Shortcodes and blocks that reference the 2.x form will not change. At this point, GiveWP users will move ahead with testing out the 3.0 form to make sure it works properly and is set up exactly as you want it to be a proper replacement.

Next, once the 3.0 form has been tested, the user will replace the 2.x form with the 3.0 form anywhere it is used on the site. This will likely be done manually as not to risk creating problems.

Finally, once the 3.0 form is in place and working, the admin will trigger (probably at the click of a button) a migration of all the data from the 2.x form to the 3.0 form. This means all donations that were associated with the 2.x form will now be associated with the 3.0 form, so the 2.x form can be safely trashed. Thank you old form, you did great.
