Why You Should Update to WordPress 6.2

As the release of GiveWP 3.0 looms on the horizon, it's critical to update your WordPress site to 6.2 to ensure compatibility and functionality.

As we approach the release of GiveWP 3.0, it’s essential to update to the latest version of WordPress. Maintain your site’s security and compatibility with GiveWP by keeping your site up-to-date. This ensures you can use groundbreaking new features, like Design Mode. GiveWP’s next-generation Visual Donation Form Builder requires WordPress 6.0 or higher.

GiveWP 3.0 Requires WordPress 6.0 or Higher

You should always ensure your website uses the most up-to-date, stable version of WordPress. With GiveWP 3.0 coming soon, this is especially true. GiveWP will officially support only the current and previous two major versions of WordPress upon the release of GiveWP 3.0. Today, 72% of all WordPress sites use the last two major versions.

WordPress 6.0 was released a year ago, in May 2022. The WordPress project generously provides official support and security updates for version 4.0 and later. Lagging behind the current release is not a recommended practice for security and compatibility reasons.

Many WordPress plugins and themes have a minimum WordPress version requirement because they take advantage of the newest functionality in WordPress’s ever-evolving codebase. Plugins and themes requiring newer versions of WordPress than you have adopted will not work correctly, if at all.

An Unmatched Site, Content, and Form Building Experience

The GiveWP team has been at the forefront of WordPress core development, contributing code libraries to the project and also benefitting from its evolution as the world’s leading digital publishing platform. As a result of this close collaboration, GiveWP relies on features introduced in WordPress 5.9 and higher.

As GiveWP developer Kyle Johnson explains, GiveWP’s Design Mode “is an example of constructing a unique, while familiar, editing experience.” Design Mode uses components in WordPress core’s block editor to provide a familiar user experience, but the GiveWP development team has customized it for building donation forms.

Soon, the GiveWP team will release GiveWP 3.0 with its much-anticipated form design capabilities. To take advantage of GiveWP and WordPress’s evolving capabilities, you must upgrade to WordPress 6.0 or higher.

A Mature Full-Site Editing Experience Your Content Team Will Love

The WordPress 6.2 experience makes significant improvements to navigation within the site editor. It streamlines site development and maintenance with reusable blocks and template parts that are easy to navigate and deploy. Marketing and content teams will appreciate the efficiencies these new tools bring to their work.

In WordPress 6.2 or higher you can edit block styles individually or globally, turn old widgets into new blocks, build on standardized header and footer patterns, and design or modify your site theme entirely from the new Style Book feature. The WordPress Core Performance team has also continued to ensure new releases are faster and more efficient than their predecessors.

Let’s prepare for a new era of unmatched site, content, and form-building experience, with WordPress and GiveWP!

Steps to Properly Update WordPress

Safely updating your WordPress site is a critical part of keeping your plugins – including GiveWP – working appropriately. We’ve written an extensive checklist, but (in a nutshell) there are the seven steps you should take before updating your WordPress website:

  1. Read the changelogs and update-related documentation.
  2. Take a complete backup of your website.
  3. Deploy the backup to a private test environment.
  4. Apply the updates one at a time on your test site.
  5. Test critical pages and functionality.
  6. Perform diagnostics and a plugin audit.
  7. Update your live site.

If you plan to adopt the 6.2 version line, you should update to WordPress 6.2.2 or higher. WordPress 6.2 introduced many new features for full site editing. And as we commonly see with new major releases, the first follow-up releases (6.2.1 and 6.2.2) address bugs that survived early testing.

What WordPress Version Are You On?

As we prepare to launch GiveWP 3.0 and work toward new possibilities with online donation forms, we would love to know what WordPress version you use on your website.
